Pack 684 is the largest Pack in the District and takes pride in the program it delivers to the Scouts. The Pack is consistently a Unit Award winner and provided leadership this year for the District Pinewood Derby, District Roundtables, and Springfield Scouting Expo. The Pack reached over 80 scouts in 2010-2011 and is estimated that about 1 in every 4 eligible boys at Sangster Elementary School is in the Pack. Many families join Pack 684 so they can enjoy scouting with their school or neighborhood friends. Most of our scouts are from Sangster Elementary School in 1st - 5th grade. Kindengarten students are eligible to join the unit June 1st at the end of their Kindengarten year.
We currently have 2 Tiger dens, 2 Wolf Dens, 3 Bear Dens, and 2 Webelos I Dens. Each of the dens are led by an adult Den Leader (an Akela) and at least one adult Assistant Den Leader (an Akela). All are trained and current in their required training. Our Pack sets aggressive training expectations for our parent leaders (Akelas) that meet or exceed goals of the Boy Scouts of American - our sons deserve trained leaders and our leaders deserve to be trained. Most of the dens also have den chiefs, Boy Scouts, who aid the Den Leader and provide role models for the cub scouts.
Our scouts usually have 1 to 2 den meetings a month and a Pack meeting or Pack activity a month. Pack meetings are on a Wednesday night from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Sangster Elementary School cafeteria/gym. What differentiates our Pack from others is leadership, adult participation, organization, comraderity, fun, and program. We are funded primarily through scout popcorn sales in the Fall and can offer scouting to your son at no dues, if the scout sells a certain amount of popcorn. Our Pack puts all its efforts for fund raising into popcorn sales so there is no other fund raising activity for the Pack the rest of the year.
Pack annual activities typically include:
* Two Pack overnight camping outings
* Fall Popcorn Festival
* Community service projects including a food drive
* Pinewood Derby
* Cubmobile outing
* Summer picnic
* Ski/snowboard outing
* Hikes and bike event/s
* Summer day camps
We schedule summer activities to keep the Pack vibrant during the summer. This year we have an overnighter on the USS Constellation in Baltimore, tour of Camden Yards, and Minor League baseball overnighter. We post other age appropriate activities on our calendar for families as a service to them.
